Lions dismiss defensive coordinator Vince Tobin Detroit Lions Press Release January 7, 2001
Pontiac, Mich.- The Detroit Lions announced Monday that they have dismissed defensive coordinator Vince Tobin.
'Vince Tobin's career has proven him to be one of the outstanding and finest defensive coaches that has ever coached this game,' said Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg. 'However, coaching changes are harsh realities of this business each and every season. In this case, things just didn't work out and we needed to make a change.'
Tobin, 58, joined the Lions as defensive coordinator February 1, 2001. He is 15-year NFL coaching veteran, who also served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals (1996-00). Prior to receiving that assignment in '96, he was defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 1986-92 and Indianapolis Colts in 1994-95. His coaching career began at his alma mater, the University of Missouri, beginning as a graduate assistant in 1965 and continuing as a full-time defensive assistant from 1967-70 and as the Tigers' defensive coordinator from 1971-76. He then spent six seasons (1977-82) in the same capacity for the CFL's British Columbia Lions before serving as defensive coordinator of the USFL's Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars from 1983-85.
No further comments are available due to Mornhinweg and president and CEO Matt Millen are attending practices for the annual East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco, Calif.
